about
I am looking down on Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia. The hills around the city are green and steep. If you need a rest, you take a taxi to Asko Bus Station, head west to Menagesha via New Ambo Road.
I see the big catchment lakes, the skyscrapers in a cloud of smog, some faraway cars and lorries on their way. Merchants, peasents, shepherds, visitors, mothers, chickens, pastors going somewhere. I don't know them, but I am with them.
Last night, my friend Abera took my to a concert. There was a brilliant live band and many ageing Ethiopian pop stars. Each was singing his hit song then disappeared in the dark. Each had some kind of unique swagger. An ageing 50's blues Sultan, a fat hyperactive midlife-crisis plagued George Michael. Each time the crowd sang their throats sore, then cheered immensely. My friend translated the lyrics. I finally felt like I could transcend the distance between our worlds.
You'll have to pass the old Menagesha Garaw Medhanealem Monastery on the top of the hill before arriving at the lookout. I am standing there, looking and thinking smart thoughts.
After about ten minutes I turn around.
There's a monk sitting on a branch of a tree looking at me.
He's smiling.
lyrics
Treetop monastery fire of light
Perpetuum mobile of desire at night
Melinda is she gonna tell me “I am alright.”?
Dirty streets walking like a feminine host
My love is adjacent I am chasing her ghost
I’m the king of the island, the man on the moon
If right now I’m not on fire, I’m gonna be soon
Then I gotta be strong
I gotta be brave
Gotta belong
I gotta behave
Then the bee hive is buzzing busting me into my grave
And I’m wrapped up in a rocket I think I can’t keep the pace
Let me tell you that I love you
If that’s all I’m allowed to do
Let me give you all the sweet talk
That looks so good on you
Treetop monastery, mist on the grass
I can see the green hills, the city of glass
I’m the king of the canvas the man on the moon
If right now I’m not on fire I’m gonna be soon
Then I gotta be strong
I gotta be brave
Gotta belong
I gotta behave
Then the bee hive is buzzing busting me into my grave
And I’m wrapped up in a rocket I think I can’t keep the pace
Let me tell you that I love you
If that’s all I’m allowed to do
Let me give you all the sweet talk
That looks so good on you
Let me give you all the sweet talk
That looks so good on you
